Training providers concentrate open courses where the volume is, which usually means central Manchester. For a Wigan employer that turns a one-day course into a one-day course plus two hours of travelling per person, and it turns a single replacement first aider into a disproportionate amount of hassle.

When a group course is not the right answer

Most training pages push you towards the bigger purchase. This one will not, because for a lot of Wigan businesses it would be the wrong advice.

Group courses are priced per course with a minimum of 12 places chargeable. That is excellent value if you have a dozen people to train and poor value if you have four. A small employer with three or four staff needing first aid is almost always better off buying open places, and we would rather tell you that than take the larger booking.

Group training at your premises

Where a group course does make sense, the trainer comes to you anywhere in the borough at no travel charge, the price is flat across the block of places, and the examples can use your own equipment and your own hazards instead of a generic warehouse.

• Manual handling, taught against the loads your team actually lifts
• Level 2 Principles of COSHH
• Level 3 Risk Assessment and Level 3 Health and Safety
• Level 1 and Level 3 Food Safety
• Paediatric first aid for nurseries
• Mental Health First Aid, which takes up to 16 with a minimum of 6 chargeable

Manual handling is the one worth flagging for a borough with this much warehousing and distribution in it. The law does not simply require training: the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 say avoid hazardous handling where reasonably practicable, assess what you cannot avoid, then reduce the risk. Training is one way of reducing it, and on its own the weakest one. A trolley or a better shelf height removes the risk; training asks someone to cope with it.

How many first aiders do you actually need?

There is no legal ratio, which surprises most people. The number comes out of your first aid needs assessment. HSE’s guidance is that where 25 or more people are employed, even in a low-hazard workplace, at least one trained first aider should be provided.

Two practical points that matter more than the headline number. Holiday and sickness cover means one first aider is really no first aider for several weeks of the year. And if your only first aider leaves, your cover walks out with them, which is the argument for training two rather than one.

Checking a provider before you book

Nobody has been “HSE approved” since 2013, and satisfying yourself that a provider is competent is the employer’s own responsibility. It takes about ten minutes and costs nothing.

Ask which awarding organisation issues the certificate, not which logos are on the website. Ask about the trainer’s qualifications and currency. Ask how many people will be in the room, because for first aid HSE guidance notes that class sizes above 12 raise concerns about assessing everyone properly without a second trainer.
